Why Lifestraw is not the water purification for you…

How many of you have heard of Lifestraw? I would venture to guess several have. So why would I make the bold statement that the Lifestraw is not the water purification process for you?

Let me give you a few facts about Lifestraw and then I will explain.

Fact 1: Lifestraw filters 1,000 liters (264 gallons)

Fact 2: Lifestraw uses no chemicals

Fact 3: Lifestraw removes 99.9999% bacteria

Fact 4: Lifestraw removes 99.9% protozoa including Giardia & Cryptosporidium

Fact 5: Lifestraw can be stored indefinitely

All these facts about Lifestraw all seem great right? They are. So here is the biggest problem…Lifestraw leaves us vulnerable in a few categories. Lifestraw does not filter out any virus nor does it filter out any dissolves solids.

So let me tell you about Seychelle. Seychelle is a company that makes a filter that they sell to a few different companies. We carry a product in store called NDUR that uses a Seychelle filter.

Let me give you some facts about Seychelle products:

Fact 1: Seychelle filters 100+ gallons depending on the quality of water you are putting through it.

Fact 2: Seychelle uses no chemicals

Fact 3: Seychelle removes 99.9999% bacteria

Fact 4: Seychelle removes 99.9% protozoa including Giardia & Cryptosporidium

Fact 5: Seychelle can be stored indefinitely

Fact 6: Seychelle removes 99.9999% of VIRUS

Fact 7: Seychelle removes up to 99.99% of dissolved solids such as: Chromium 6, Chlorine, Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Aluminum, and Copper

Fact 8: Seychelle makes a Radiological filter that does all of the above PLUS it filters radiological products such as Gross Beta, Radon 222, Alpha Radium 226, Uranium, Plutonium, Cesium 134 and Cesium 137.

The last point that I want to make is that the Lifestraw is just that…a Straw. Can you imagine cooking for your family and needing clean water and what you have is a straw to filter your water? What we like about the Seychelle brand is that you can buy the filters that you can put on any number of products: water bottle, canteen, straw, pump, etc. The products all come with the filter and you can buy additional filters if needed.

Lifestraw: $24.95

Lifestraw Replacement Filter: None that I have found when doing research for this blog.

Seychelle Water Bottle or Canteen: $39

Seychelle Replacement filter: $29

In conclusion, the filter from Seychelle is about $5 more but filters more than Lifestraw. Seychelle has a lot of options available to you in multiple forms. You should have 2 gallons per person per day of water for you and your family in case of a disaster.

We feel like it is our job to inform you of what is out there so that you can make the best decision for your family. While Lifestraw is not a bad filter (and way better than nothing!), it isn’t the best out there and there are other options that do more for a very small additional investment.

Please let us know if you have any questions about your water filtration needs.
